When my dad started raising pigs over 45 years ago, Feikert Club Pigs is a small family farm operation committed to producing the highest quality product. Show pig production began in the mid 80’s when my father, who was a commercial swine farmer, began buying bred gilts from Shipley Genetics to give us an upper hand at the county fair. These were the initial building blocks of our sow herd today.
As artificial insemination became more prevalent we began buying semen from Top Cut Show Pig Sires (previously Birchwood Genetics). This breeding rendered two grand champions, three reserve champions and numerous class champions between 1988 and 2000 at the Holmes County Fair. In 2000 we began to expand our 20 sow operation, incorporated breeding from Real McCoy and Hi Point Genetics, and included advertising outside of Holmes County.
Each year we have enjoyed increased success and have expanded our herd size to between 30 and 50 sows depending on the time of the year. We cull sows based on structure and productivity after club pig season, always keeping in mind where the trends in the show pig industry is headed. Our sow heard is presently based on the prodigy from sires It, Vigilante, Shipley’s Total Package, Hitman II, Barnburner, Icehouse, Major Move 4, Just Perfect and Blackout. If you care to deal with a producer who values customer satisfaction and the return customer most of all, give our family a call. -- Matt Feikert
